Welcome to Zen: Your Way.

[Pause 2.5s]

This place is for you. A quiet space to sit, with as much help as you want, and no more than you need.

[Pause 3s]

In the next few minutes I will show you around the app, then teach you a small technique you can use anywhere. At the end, if you feel like it, we can try it together for a minute.

[Pause 4s]

So, the app. Underneath everything it is just a timer. Open it, pick a duration, sit. That is the whole thing.

[Pause 3s]

But have a look in the settings when you have a moment. You will find bells you can choose. A warmup and a cooldown. Intervals, if you like to be reminded partway through. Background soundscapes. Breathwork guidance. And guided sessions like this one.

[Pause 3s]

Take what is useful. Leave the rest. The idea is that all of it can fade into the background when you no longer need it, and what remains is you, sitting.

[Pause 4s]

Now, why does any of that matter. Zen is just sitting. No mantra, no goal. The instructions are terse, and that terseness can be brutal when you are starting out. Many people spend a long time sampling meditation apps before just sitting finally clicks.

[Pause 3s]

So take the detour. Explore. There are benefits to be had along the way, and there is no reason to wait for them. That is not cheating. It is how most of us get there.

[Pause 4s]

Here is one of those benefits, early. A small thing you can use. It is barely meditation. Closer to breathwork. Meditation-adjacent, if you like. It is called doing a loop.

[Pause 3s]

It is a way of grounding yourself. Of being present, right where you are.

[Pause 3s]

I should say clearly what this is before we try it. It is two fingers and a breath. It is not therapy. Some people use it to stay present when they start to drift. If you are carrying something heavy, please find someone qualified to help you carry it.

[Pause 4s]

Here is how it goes. Let your thumb rest against your index finger. On the next breath in, touch them together. A small circle, rather than a tap. On the breath after that, move to your middle finger. Then your ring finger. Then your little finger. Then turn around and come back the same way.

[Pause 4s]

There is no counting. No words. The position of your thumb holds your place, so there is nothing left for you to say to yourself.

[Pause 3s]

If you would like to try it with me now, begin. One touch for each breath. Back and forth.

[Silence 45s]

If you lose your place, you will feel it in your hand before you think it. That is the whole point. Begin again wherever you are.

[Silence 30s]

You do not need a cushion for this. No posture, no quiet room, no free half hour. You can use it standing in queues, on calls, walking.

[Pause 3s]

Let your hand rest now. Take one ordinary breath.

[Pause 4s]

That is all. When you are ready, open your eyes.
