Sound — Full
This is Sound. For about a minute, you listen to the soundscape around you. That is all you need to do — just listen to the sounds that are already here.
[Pause 3s]
Make yourself comfortable — sitting, standing, whatever works right now. Soften the eyes, or close them — whatever helps you listen.
[Pause 3s]
This sits with Body and Light as three foundational sense practices — feeling, hearing, and seeing. This one is hearing.
[Pause 3s]
What this offers is a simple rest in hearing. You do not have to chase sounds, or shut them out. Noise does not have to be the enemy. It can be the practice.
[Pause 3s]
Many sitting traditions rest with hearing as a field of awareness. This is a short mid-day cut of that — not a long open sit.
[Pause 3s]
A plain note. This is a small attention practice. It is not therapy, and it is not medical advice. If something feels too heavy, please reach out to someone who can help.
[Pause 3s]
Want a timer in your hands? A Breath Loop can hold about a minute — one breath on each finger. Optional. Or just follow the guidance.
[Pause 3s]
Here is what you do.
[Pause 3s]
Soften the eyes, or close them. Listen to the soundscape around you. Do not reach out for sounds. Let them come to you. You may notice continuous sounds — a background hum, a soft hiss, or traffic in the distance. You may also notice brief, discrete sounds — a door closing, a voice, or footsteps. Just notice them. If the mind names a sound, or tells a story about it, that is fine. Soften, and come back to listening. You do not need silence.
[Pause 4s]
Get ready. Feel free to follow along — we start now.
[Pause 2s]
Soften the eyes, or close them. Listen to the soundscape around you.
[Pause 4s]
All you need to do is listen. Let the sounds come to you. Do not reach out for them.
[Pause 5s]
Notice any continuous sound — a background hum, or a soft hiss. Just hear it.
[Pause 5s]
Notice any brief sounds too — a door closing, or a voice nearby. Just notice them.
[Pause 5s]
If the mind tells a story about a sound, soften and return to listening.
[Pause 5s]
The sounds can stay. Soften. You can leave it here.
[Pause 3s]
And that is your minute with sound.
A few times with the guidance — then try resting with the soundscape on your own.
Thank you for resting with sound.
